A Message from the WGS Faculty

One month has passed since the Women’s March in Washington, and now more than ever, as feminist scholars at Wake Forest University, we are deeply committed to building a community that embraces people of different beliefs and practices, including our Muslim neighbors and friends. This work is particularly important in the present political climate where segments of the American populace have been pitted against one another. Together with our Muslim partners at Wake Forest we will remain unequivocally steadfast in opposing Islamophobia and in keeping the doors of dialogue open in order to foster a local and global community; we will also seek new ways to share our resources of feminist education, formation, and social justice action; we will actively promote a positive vision of our common humanity and the dignity of difference. While free political and cultural debate is a vital element in our democracy, we stand alongside those who have been made vulnerable or cast out of our communities because of their religion, as well as those who have been denied spaces for prayer, reflection, study, and community building. As part of our mission in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, we value intersectionality as a method for building coalitions among different groups, and tirelessly working toward social justice in defense of diversity, mutual respect, inclusion, and free inquiry.
